
Serena Williams in ‘difficult period’ says coach Patrick Mouratoglou

Serena Williams’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has revealed the world No1 is in a “difficult period” but confirmed he would be staying on in his role.
Williams has struggled all season, failing to progress beyond the fourth round of the three majors so far and at Wimbledon, her form came under further scrutiny.
A shock defeat against France’s Alizé Cornet was followed by a bizarre exit from the women’s doubles competition alongside her sister Venus when she appeared barely able to stand, served a series of uncharacteristic double faults and then withdrew from the competition in tears.
The official explanation was that Williams was struggling with a “viral illness” but other theories included issues with Mouratoglou, with whom she has been romantically linked, although neither have ever confirmed it.
Speculation of a rift has been denied by Mouratoglou, who told France’s Tennis Magazine: “Serena is clearly going through a difficult period. But since Wimbledon, we have had long hours of talks and we are getting back to work.
“Today she is in the mood to get back to training so she can return even stronger. At no time was there any question of us stopping our collaboration.
